Why Adopt a Meerkat?
By adopting a meerkat, you are helping the welfare and future survival of these delightful desert animals. Adopting a meerkat is a perfect present for an animal-loving child or relative, allowing them to be involved with meerkats without actually being tempted to own one themselves. For us, meerkats as pets are an absolute no-go area. Adoption or sponsorship is by far the best way to show your love for meerkats.
You can either adopt a wild meerkat, or adopt/sponsor a meerkat in a zoo or wildlife park.
The best-known wild meerkat adoption scheme is the Meerkat Magic Conservation Porject in Oudtshoorn, on the Western Cape of South Africa, run by husband and wife team Grant and Laura Mc Ilrath. Grant is a graduate of the University of Cambridge, a conservationalist and research biologist who has researched wild meerkats since 1993. he has contributed to numerous meerkat films and documentaries by the BBC, National Geographic and Discovery Channel. Sponsor packs for Meerkat Magic are sold through Gift Republic (see links and prices above), and you can tour the project in South Africa by appointment.
Many UK zoos and wildlife parks offer meerkat adoption or sponsorship schemes, with the obvious advantage that anyone can see 'their' meerkat without flying abroad! With most zoo meerkat sponsor programmes, you sponsor a particular named animal for a year for a fee of up to £30 or so. In return, you get information on your animal and other perks such as an adoption certificate, and some sponsorship deals include a free ticket to see your meerkats. Various organisations also have webcams, so you can see your meerkat on your PC too.
Your sponsorship money will contribute towards the care and upkeep of both your chosen animals and probably others within the park or zoo as well, as meerkats are not a costly to keep as, say, an elephant or tiger! However, meerkats do need a proper balanced diet, lots of warmth in the winter, a stimulating and suitable enclosure and environment, and the occasional medical treatment from a vet, which all adds up.
Many attractions and zoos with meerkats in the UK offer sponsorship schemes. We suggest that you choose a wildlife centre or organisation located near the recipient's home so they can visit their meerkat easily. See our our guide to UK wildlife parks, zoos, and attractions with meerkats on display, and visit the websites for details of each adoption schemes.
I want a real meerkat as a pet
In one word, don't. Meerkats belong in the wild, and their natural behaviour makes them totally unsuitable as house pets. For more details, see the superb website Jack and Mila meerkats, a no-holds barred account of the realities of meerkats as pets in a UK home - frank, fun and a real eye-opener.
